Around the Islands: October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

This year’s theme is “Embracing Hope: Healing Generations, One Survivor at a Time.” 

As part of the island community’s response to end domestic violence, the public is encouraged to come take part in kicking-off the month beginning with the proclamation signing.

Other activities in October are as follows:

• 4th — Day of Prayer.  Catholic Mass at 9 a.m., San Jose Church

• 9th — Candlelight Vigil and Men’s Walk

• 14th — Walk beginning at Oleai Beach Pavilion

• 17th, 24th and 31st — Wise Women Village Project Outreach

• Every Thursday — Street Market

Retirees meeting

 

THE first annual general membership meeting of the Commonwealth Retirement Association will be on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 6 p.m., at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.

The association is made up of all working and retired members of the original retirement program, now referred to as the Defined Benefit plan.

Election of board of directors will take place. All gubernatorial candidates are confirmed to be present to speak and answers questions.

Rota checkpoints

(DPS) — The Department of Public Safety will conduct occupant protection child restraint, or OP/CR, checkpoints on Rota today.

The schedules and locations are as follows:

• Along San Francisco Highway Tatachog by Northern Marianas College.  The checkpoint starts at 6:30 a.m. and ends at 7:45 a.m.

• District #4 across from the Aquarius Bar & Grill.  The checkpoint starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 11:15 a.m. 

• Along San Francisco Highway District #2 by the former Midtown Market.  The checkpoint starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 5:15 p.m.

Checkpoints are subject to be terminated if it begins to rain.
