Around the Islands: Water outage in Puerto Rico & Garapan

The CUC Water Division Distribution Maintenance crew is scheduled to work on the Puerto Rico Reservoir to seal all holes and openings, inspect, clean and disinfect the storage tank. This required work is necessary to protect treated stored water and provide improved overall water quality for public consumption. This work enables water division to comply with the stipulated order concerning drinking water operations and maintenance in correcting major sanitary deficiencies cited during storage tanks inspections. Water service will be restored to affected customers as soon as the work is completed.

Residents are encouraged to practice strict water conservation and to teach children and household workers to save water, especially during this period. Rainwater catchment systems, water tanks should be cleaned and float valves installed or replaced to ensure that water does not overflow from any tanks.

Red flag raised in 8 sites

(DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality has raised the red flag at one site in Rota and advises the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of these locations for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.

Samples collected from Tanapag Meeting Hall, Central Repair Shop, DPW Channel Bridge, S. Puerto Rico Dump, Smiling Cove Marina, American Memorial Park, Garapan Fishing Dock and San Antonio Beach contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria — enterococci — that exceeded the CNMI’s marine water quality standards.

Samples from Managaha and Tinian did not exceed the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards.

Covenant launches YouTube video clips

The CNMI Covenant Party has just launched a YouTube site featuring video clips from its successful midterm rally on Sunday, July 12, a media release from the group said.

The Covenant Party is believed to be the first CNMI political party to capitalize on YouTube Internet video technology to promote its campaign in the 2009 election cycle.

“I encourage all CNMI voters to visit our YouTube site to follow our campaign,” said Gregorio M. Camacho, the Covenant Party Chairman. Camacho especially urges absentee ballot voters abroad to visit the site and get a sense of the governors’ campaign

The CNMI Covenant Party is gaining strong bipartisan support from both Democrats and Republicans, as prominent Democrats and Republicans were present at the Covenant Party’s midterm rally last Sunday.

Republican supporters of former Governor Babauta, including former key Babauta committee officers, are now supporting the Covenant Party.

Democrats supporting the Covenant Party include former Speaker Pedro Guerrero, former Senator David Cing (Tinian), former Speaker Vicente M. Sablan, former Governor Froilan Tenorio, and Vicente N. Santos, a CNMI Covenant negotiator, among others.

Former Governor Froilan Tenorio, a former Democrat and Reform Party member, is now a Covenant Party candidate for Precinct 1.

The Covenant Party is expected to field the most complete slate of candidates this year.
