Northern Marianas students join annual children’s convention in Japan

(MVA) — A six-student delegation from the Northern Mariana Islands have joined children from 46 other regions at the 21st Annual Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention in Fukuoka, Japan from July 8-22, 2009.

The APCC, a non-profit organization, aims to promote international cooperation between children so they will grow into adults with a strong sense of their identity as “global citizens.” This year’s theme is “We are the BRIDGE: We connect dreams around the world.” The Northern Marianas’ participation is funded by APCC.

The APCC was founded in 1989 by the Fukuoka Junior Chamber and hosts children from more than 30 countries/regions throughout the Asian-Pacific area. This year, Fukuoka has invited over 300 children from 46 different areas all over Asia. There are representatives from the United States, Tahiti, Kiribati, the Philippines, Malaysia, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, China, and the Maldives, to name a few.

“The Asian-Pacific Children’s Convention is a wonderful opportunity for young people of our islands to understand the place of the Northern Marianas in the region and the world, in general,” said Marianas Visitors Authority Managing Director Perry Tenorio.  “In interacting with children of other countries, they will have the experience to learn from others and in the process, understand better what makes the Northern Marianas unique in the world.”

Junior Ambassadors must demonstrate that they believe in the APCC philosophy and be able to spend about ten days living with a foreign host family and take part in day-to-day activities. Ambassadors will learn about the different cultures represented at the convention, as well as the Japanese way of life. The delegates will also have the opportunity to share a variety of cultures, as well as presentations for the whole congregation.

Each year, Northern Marianas public and private schools are requested to submit a nominee, assigned with an alternate participant to represent the CNMI at the annual Convention. Junior Ambassadors are selected based on the participation criteria set forth by the APCC.  This year’s student participants are Joseph M. Lizama, Jeffrey S. Centino, Thomas A. Manglona II, Benikina A. Lizama, Paulaine T. Sasamoto, and Annabel P. Manzon, accompanied by chaperone Tasia Sablan Bocago of MVA.
