Artists see better sales at 5th holiday bazaar

Leila Staffler, one of the designers of handmade jewelry, said sales had been brisk compared to last year.

“I had been joining the annual holiday bazaar for the past four years, but this year has been the best,” she said.

Staffler, who derives inspiration from colors and shapes, came up with a variety of handmade earrings and sea glass ornaments which turned out to be the bestsellers.

Professional photographer Jack Hardy’s best sellers were medium-sized 2010 calendars depicting scenic views of the CNMI, and postcards with views from Micronesia.

Dive instructor and underwater photographer Mike Tripp said sales had been good especially with the new items in his inventory — a book and DVD titled “Ocean Life,” and other DVDs showing underwater wonders.

Leaf painter Ernie David, arts and portraits illustrator Greg Bacnis and graphic designer Romy Cal were all first time participants in the holiday bazaar but they enjoyed brisk sales of their products.

Fu Dogs & Qi’s bestsellers were little items including Chinese charms and pendulums.

Carolinian artist Joe P. Kani had his hands full as children lined up to get face and body tattoos for $1 to $2.

Also showcased  were photos by Leslie Ware, paintings of Greg Elliot, ceramics of Nancy Provido, handmade jewelry of artists Kathryn Fuller and Nava Khorram, the island jams of Deece Revilla, and the crafts, carvings and paintings of the other island artists.

Various groups like the Doremi School of Music, Saipan Community School Ukelele Band, Glushko’s Academy of Performing Arts, Keynotes School of Music, Angel’s International School of Dance, and the Saipan Grand Hotel singing superstars champion graced the whole-day event.

Winners of the hourly raffle draws went home with attractive prizes from the sponsors.
