Aussie doctors to visit Fiji

SUVA (Pacnews) — A team of specialist surgeons from Australia will visit Fiji next week to perform free operations at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital here in Fiji’s capital.

The group of volunteer medical specialists will carry out operations free of charge that cannot be performed by their local counterparts due to lack of specialists and equipment.

Local spokeswoman for the project, Amanda Ralph-Waqa, said depending on the type of operation, it can cost anywhere from $1,670) for a simple operation to $11,100 for complex surgery if performed in Australia.

The visit by the 45-member team, consisting of volunteer doctors, nurses and medical technicians from all over Australia, is part of the Outreach Community Program coordinated by Sydney’s Adventist Hospital.

Groups of medical specialists under the same program have visited the country in the past and this will be their 11th visit to Fiji.

The team will also train their local counterparts on medical techniques while in the country. It’s not known how many locals will benefit from the project, as the doctors are still assessing cases.
