Authorities to check Kiribati radio stations

TARAWA (Radio Kiribati/PINA) — Two new radio stations planning to operate in Kiribati are to undergo another series of inspections by local communication authorities, an official said.

This includes the station set up Kiribati’s first president, Ieremia Tabai, a current opposition member of parliament. He has been trying unsuccessfully to get a license to start broadcasting and has launched a weekly newspaper while he waits.

The official at the Ministry of Information, Communication and Transport said that the radio stations would be inspected again.

This is despite reports that the stations have imported the required equipment and conform to all legal and technical requirements.

The second station waiting approval is the government’s school broadcast station.

Kiribati’s main news media are the government-owned Broadcasting and Publications Authority, operating Radio Kiribati and the newspaper Te Uekera.
