Babauta wants fair, equal treatment of workers

GOVERNOR Juan N. Babauta says his administration will neither condone nor tolerate discrimination in any form.

Babauta, in a directive to all department and activity heads, required full compliance with existing federal statues that govern the rights of workers.

Babauta said the CNMI Equal Employment Opportunity Program was established to ensure compliance with federal laws.

He said the government will “vigorously enforce” a policy of “non-tolerance” for sexual harassment in the workplace.

Every government employee possesses the right to be free from threats, harassment or coercion, he added.

Babauta said his administration is committed to guaranteeing these rights.

“It is my firm belief and the policy of this administration that those residents of the CNMI who are legally entitled to work for the commonwealth government will be considered equally and indiscriminately, in accordance with relevant statutes, for employment and advancement in the government service,” the governor said.

Babauta, who is also the equal employment officer of the commonwealth, has appointed acting Personnel Management Director Juan I. Tenorio as his deputy.

Tenorio will develop equal employment opportunity policies, implement the program and oversee its operation.

Babauta said Tenorio will also appoint coordinators for Rota and Tinian to ensure compliance.
