During the celebration, Rakibul Islam Mintu, organizer of the Bangladesh Cultural Group, said they will present traditional cultural dances and songs and serve Bangladeshi dishes.
There will also be a brief reading of the history of Bangladesh.
Although he is not sure if most Bangladeshis on Saipan may able to celebrate next year’s Independence Day once the federalization law is enforced, Mintu is confident that they will have a special celebration today.
“We only want to remember our independence,” he told Variety.
Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan, gained its independence from Pakistan on March 26, 1971.
“Victory Day” also commemorates the official creation of Bangladesh.
Today’s celebration will take place in Garapan at the back of the Bank of Saipan starting at 8 p.m.
Mintu is inviting all Bangladeshis and other members of the local community to join the celebration.
