Bank depositors troop to Capitol Hill

AT least 50 Bank of Saipan depositors trooped to Capitol Hill Wednesday afternoon to air their concerns regarding the bank.

Acting Gov. Diego T. Benavente and Attorney General Robert T. Torres met the depositors, who are all garment workers, and explained to them the bank’s condition.

Benavente reassured the depositors that their money in the bank is “safe.”

Benavente told Variety that the garment workers were “very concerned” about their deposits in the bank.

He said some of the garment workers’ contracts will expire soon, and they intend to leave the CNMI.

“They fear that before they can even get their money from the bank, their contracts will already expire,” Benavente said.

“We just don’t know when (can they get their) money,” he added. “But their money is safe. We explained that fact and we told them that there is no cause for alarm.”
