The BOH volunteers taught a valuable lesson on personal finance to more than 1,000 high school and intermediate students on Guam, Saipan, Palau, and in American Samoa.
Get Smart About Credit Day is an annual event where bankers visit local classrooms to share the “credit facts of life” with students. Since it was started by the ABA Education Foundation in 2003 more than 18,000 bankers have reached approximately 704,993 young people.
The “Get Smart About Credit Day” program teaches young adults how to manage credit, read a credit report, protect personal financial information and recognize the signs of overspending. These are all important need-to-know facts for anyone using credit for the first time — whether in the form of a credit card, student loan or car loan. For many students, this may be their only opportunity to receive a personal finance lesson before graduating.
Bank of Hawaii has participated in the program for more than 10 years on Guam, reaching more than 2,500 students. The success of the program has also been extended out to Bank of Hawaii’s operations on Saipan, Palau, and in American Samoa.
