Beautify CNMI co-founder Cinta M. Kaipat presented “green” awards to this year’s champions CTSI Logistics and Frank B. Camacho, block captain of the Dandan Neighborhood Watch.
Kaipat said the Environmental Champion Award recognizes a person or group that exemplifies the Beautify CNMI spirit.
“The environmental champion is a role model who brings environmental issues to the forefront of public consciousness. They make things happen and effect change,” Kaipat said.
The Beautify CNMI Steward Awards this year went to Shirley’s Restaurant and to Angelo O. Villagomez who is now based in Florida.
“These winners have demonstrated the need to take pride in our islands and to take care of the place we all call home,” she said.
Saturday’s awarding marked the fourth year that Beautify CNMI recognized individuals, businesses and organizations that volunteered and advocated for the environment.
Camacho said he considers receiving the Environmental Champion Award one of his greatest achievements.
Among his regular activities in Dandan is to revitalize and clean the children’s playground.
“We started with only seven volunteers to do regular cleanups in the village every Sunday morning but this number has doubled up already. I hope to encourage more volunteers to join us to make the village and the whole CNMI a better place to live in,” Camacho said.
He is grateful to the regular volunteers who help maintain the cleanliness of the village, and these include Nunu Sanchez, Mitch Aaron, John Deleon Guerrero, Joe Palacios, Ely Cabrera, Fiel Mendiola and Frank Camacho Jr.
The nominations for the annual Beautify CNMI awards come from the community and the committee chairs then select winners.
Beautify CNMI is a coalition of concerned citizens, private groups, and government entities united to enhance the CNMI’s natural beauty and foster community pride in its residents and visitors. For more information visit http://www.beautifycnmi.org.
