Citizen scientists are invited to learn about coral reef threats at the Eyes of the Reef training opportunity on April 25, 2025.

BAILEY Warren, a coral reef fellow of the Coral Reef Initiative, invites “citizen scientists” to a free Eyes of the Reef training opportunity on April 25, at the Learning Center on the third floor of the Division of Coastal Resources Management building in Gualo Rai from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The training will help island residents identify coral types as well as threats to the reefs including coral bleaching, predation, and other reef stress.

Upon completing the training, participants may voluntarily conduct reef monitoring activities while snorkeling, diving, or otherwise engaging with the ocean.

Through the Eyes of the Reef program, they can recognize and monitor the status of the reefs around the Marianas and make an informed decision on whether or not DCRM should be made aware of it.

Warren said the reef is “deeply connected to the daily lives of everyone in the CNMI.”

“They provide food through local fisheries, protect our shorelines and infrastructure from storms, and carry cultural and historical significance for the CNMI community,” she said. “By learning about coral health, participants can gain the tools and knowledge needed to help protect these vital natural resources for future generations.”

To register for the training, call (670) 664-8301, email bwarren@dcrm.gov.mp or fill out the form at https://tinyurl.com/eyesofthereef
