Benavente, who has yet to pick a running mate, has been having second thoughts about seeking the GOP gubernatorial nomination.
Rep. Heinz S. Hofschneider and former Gov. Juan N. Babauta have already expressed willingness to run in a primary that will decide who will be the party’s gubernatorial candidate in November.
“I am not ready to make any statement yet,” Benavente said yesterday when asked if he is still a candidate.
He declined to comment when asked if he will support Babauta once he, Benavente, withdraws from the race.
Benavente was the running mate of Babauta in the 2001 and 2005 gubernatorial elections.
The GOP has tentatively scheduled a primary for June 26.
