Education Commissioner Dr. Alfred Ada said the new policy will address the overcrowding at HMS and improve the student-teacher ratio.
He said about 130 middle school students residing in Puerto Rico, Navy Hill and Chinatown will be transferred to Tanapag Middle School.
He noted that the student population of Hopwood was 932 in the last school year.
The other areas for rezoning are Chalan Kiya-Mobil upwards, As Terlaje, Kannat Tabla, As Lito, Finasisu and Joeten-Dandan.
The middle school students in these areas will now go to Dandan Middle School instead of Hopwood.
Ada did not say how many students will be transferred to Dandan, which had a student population of nearly 700 the last school year.
He said rezoning will also mean shorter commutes for majority of students, easing traffic conditions in San Jose and fuel savings on the part of PSS.
“The criteria being used to identify rezoning areas are distance, commute time and safety,” he added.
Ada said he has also been communicating with the principals involved, adding that “they are willing and are able to accommodate” new students.
