BOE may extend search for new commissioner

The acting commissioner for administrative services, Charlie Kenty said the two individuals have yet to turn in the required documents.

Hence, he added, the two cannot be considered applicants yet.

The two are based on  island.

The Board of Education fired then-Education Commissioner David Borja on June 4, saying it was dissatisfied with his performance.

The board wants to name a new commissioner on Aug. 1 in time for the school opening in September.

However during its meeting on  Friday, the board members agreed to extend the search if they are not satisfied with the turnout of applicants on Friday, July 18.

BOE Chairwoman Lucy Blanco-Maratita also asked the PSS human resources office about the cost of placing an advertisements in Hawaii and the West Coast.

BOE Vice Chairman Herman T. Guerrero, however, does not support extending the announcement until a final list of applicants has been made available to the board.

A proposed summary rating sheet that will be used to rank each applicant was presented to BOE on Friday and was discussed by the members.

It was decided that the candidates will be interviewed publicly but the deliberation and final selection will made in a closed-door BOE meeting.
