Borja, legal counsel and adviser of the task force in Susupe, said the community should take advantage of the police retirees’ experience.
“They’ve been trained for that duty and I don’t think they mean harm to the community,” the former lt. governor said.
He was asked by this reporter to comment on the proposal which was first made by Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council Chairman Ramon B. Camacho.
Camacho, a former police major, said he has talked with some police retirees and they are willing to help in the campaign against criminality on island.
But Borja said he has yet to study the possible legal impediments in deputizing police retirees, particularly the question of whether they can be issued firearms.
He said the Saipan municipal council should work to Legislature to pass a law to deputize police retirees.
Camacho said there are hundreds of retired police officers in the CNMI who can be tapped for peace advocacy programs.
