TINIAN Mayor Francisco M. Borja is asking Gov. Juan N. Babauta to request the U.S. Navy’s assistance in repairing the island’s port so it could accommodate bigger ships.
Borja said the Navy leased back Tinian port to the CNMI after occupying it for more than 50 years. It is currently under the control of the Commonwealth Ports Authority.
But CPA has no money to finance the rehabilitation project due to the continued decline of its revenue as a consequence of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
“We therefore ask you to assist our municipality in submitting a petition letter to the Department of the Navy…to request their assistance with this problem. Your speedy assistance will be greatly appreciated,” Borja said in his letter to the governor.
A good port is vital to the economy of Tinian, the mayor said.
