Brand new car sales drop while used car sales go up

According to the latest report released by the Commonwealth Auto Dealers Association, the island’s three car dealers — Joeten Motors, Microl Corp. and Triple J Motors — sold 154 brand new cars from Jan. 1 to May 31.

The dealers also sold 176 used cars for the same period.

Last month, the three dealers sold 26 brand new cars and 26 used cars.

Last month’s brand new car sales, however, posted a 45.83 percent drop from the 48 cars sold for the same month last year.

Microl Corp. sold 15 cars last month, claiming 57.69 percent of the market share. Joeten Motors followed with eight cars sold, while Triple “J” Motors sold three cars.

Toyota is still the leading choice by brand with 14 units sold in May. Nissan followed with six; Mitsubishi, two; Ford, Kia, Chevrolet and Mazda, one each.

From January to May, the dealers sold  90 sedans, 20 trucks, eight vans and 36 sports utility vehicles.

On a year to date comparison, the 154 brand new cars sold for the first five months of 2009 posted a 47.44 drop compared to last year’s 293 brand new cars sold for the same period.

Joeten Motors distributes Nissan, Ford, Honda and Kia. Microl Corp. sells Toyota and Chevrolet while Triple “J” Motors distributes Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Suzuki and Mazda.
