Younis, a long-time educator, became the acting chairwoman after the term of Janet H. King expired on Sept. 23. Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has yet to announce whether he will reappoint King or name a new member.
During Friday’s board meeting, Regent Maria T. Peter nominated Younis as the new chairwoman, and this was supported by the rest of the regents: Andrew Orsini, Frank Rabauliman and Elaine Hocog-Orilla.
Hocog-Orilla was also elected unopposed as vice chairwoman while Rabauliman will continue to serve as treasurer.
Younis thanked her colleagues for their support and said that the board will continue to work closely with NMC interim President Lorraine Cabrera.
Younis at the same time said the board on Thursday received the names of two candidates from the NMC presidential search committee.
She said they may not get the perfect candidate but the board will ensure that NMC will hire the “best of the best.”
The show-cause status of NMC is another issue that the board will continue to focus on, she said, adding that the college is working hard to retain its accreditation with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
NMC was given until Oct. 15 to submit a report to WASC on how it is addressing the issues identified by the accrediting agency.
The co-publisher of the Variety, Younis is the former executive director of the NMI Humanities Council and the Head Start program. She served as a classroom teacher of Marianas High School, director of Northern Marianas Academy, vice principal of Hopwood Junior High School, acting principal of Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School and principal of William S. Reyes Elementary School.
