Brothers arrested for growing marijuana

Felix, 42, and Augustine, 40, Castro appeared in court for their Gerstein hearing on Friday in the custody of the Department of Corrections.

177 marijuana plants were recovered separately from the Castro properties — majority of the plants were from Augustine Castro’s property.

Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo  imposed a $3,000 bail each on the Castro brothers.

They were required to pay $300, or 10 percent of the bail, and the rest $2,700 in unsecured bonds.

Detective Shawn White, a customs officer, was the government’s witness.

Assistant Attorney General George Hasseback represented the government while Assistant Public Defender Richard Miller served as legal counsel for the Castro brothers for the Gerstein hearing only.

White said their office received multiple calls relaying that Felix Castro was cultivating marijuana on his property.

Authorities set up  surveillance and confirmed the callers’ information.

Govendo directed DPS to conduct random checking on the Castro property to verify if they are still growing marijuana.

Augustine Castro also had standing arrest orders for small-claims and traffic cases.

The Castro brothers were directed to attend their preliminary hearing on March 12, and their arraignment on March 22.
