About 3,000 supporters cheered on as Calvo and Tenorio got on stage, promising a “new and better direction” for Guam.
“This movement is not about whether you are a Republican, Democrat or Independent. It is not about your skin color, religion or economic status; it is not about petty politics, negativism or division,” Calvo said.
“It is rather about the coming together of a great and resilient people, on a very special island and at a very dynamic and critical time in this island’s long, long history. It is about a belief in the greatness of our people and confidence in the future of our island,” he added.
“That, my dear people, is what the Guamanian Dream is all about. It is about believing in you. It is about serving you. It is about empowering you. It is about allowing you to be the very best you can be,” Calvo said.
The Calvo-Tenorio team is running against Lt. Gov. Mike Cruz and Jim Espaldon in the September GOP primary.
Tenorio said “a new direction” means “books in the classrooms, beds in the emergency room, people to process your tax refunds and money to pay your COLA, vendors…and all the other obligations in this government when it’s due. Not when the government decides to pay it back to you.”
Tenorio further went on to talk about how the island has been treated in the past several years.
“I think many of you are tired of the way you’ve been treated these past 16 years. And all you’ll get with the other teams is the same old stuff. The same tired excuses, the same ideas that won’t work and the same people that have not given you the best. Been there done that,” Tenorio said. “If you believe Adelup needs…if you need Guam needs a change; if you’ve been waiting for a new direction…vote for Eddie and me.”
Fitial endorsement
Keynote speaker CNMI Gov. Benigno Fitial stepped onto the stage to endorse the Calvo-Tenorio team.
Fitial delivered his speech all in Chamorro and touched on the importance of the unification of the Mariana Islands and believed the Calvo/Tenorio can make that happen.
Highlighting the rally was the raffle of a 2010 Hyundai Accent, round trips to the U.S. and the Philippines, a plasma flat-screen TV, a PSP Go, X-BOX 360 and cell phones.
The car was won by Juan F. Blas, Jr., an employee of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. As he approached the microphone, Blas said “I am a Democrat voting for Calvo-Tenorio.”
The car is mounted with Calvo-Tenorio stickers, which Blas is required to keep until Jan. 1 as part of the condition of his winning.
Also attending the rally were employees of businesses under the Calvo Enterprise conglomerate such as Pepsi, MidPac, PacificTelestations.
