Camacho seeks establishment of farmers market co-op

He has asked Gov. Benigno R. Fitial to endorse a grant of public domain designation for a long-term site.

Camacho, one of the prime movers of the Farmers Support Group, said the Sabalu Farmers Market facility in Susupe is an ideal location.

He said local farmers could manage and operate the 4-H club facility, including the grounds surrounding the building.

“With your guidance and endorsement of this signature industry, the CNMI can, once again, turn around this fledgling industry to the level of economic prosperity it was once known,” he told the governor in a letter.

Camacho said farmers want to revive the once thriving agriculture industry on Saipan.

The other potential site for the cooperative market is the Tuesday Night Market at the Garapan Fishing Base, which has a ready-to-occupy building, Camacho said.

He said over $500,000 in local and federal funds  had been spent already on makeover architect/engineer design and construction specifications.

There is also a U.S. congressional appropriation that remains untapped since last year, he added.

He said the Garapan site is considered one of the “so-called shovel-ready ARRA projects.”

“All that we seek is a site that the local farmers can commit to and be at for the long haul,” Camacho told the governor.
