Last year’s total collection was $77,714.40.
2010 MMAC overall chairwoman Janine F. Nogis said $60,963.16 of this year’s collections came the 15 teams while the rest were from sponsorships and donations.
The award for having the most collection in the family category went to Team Bodig which collected a total of $13,516.70.
In the school category, Grace Christian Academy came in first with a collection of $2,602.78.
In the corporate category, the Pacific Islands Club emerged on top with $12,186 while the Transportation Security Administration led in the government category with $7,717.37.
Nogis said the grand total of $75,463.16 does not include in-kind donations.
The Best Baton Award went to IT&E and Saipan Southern High School, while Team Bodig won the Most Spirit and Best Tent Awards. Team Bodig also sold the highest number of luminaries, about 1,100.
The Marianas High School and Marianas Variety team won the Most Laps Award.
The event started with the recognition of cancer survivors on island, which was followed by a night of food, fun and entertainment.
“MMAC would not survive if not for our 15 wonderful teams, sponsors and the entire community. MMAC also thanks the hardworking men and women from the Saipan mayor’s office,” Nogis said.
She said the 2010 MMAC event was, “without a doubt, an emotional roller coaster.”
She added, “It’s a beautiful thing to honor our survivors and those who are still fighting cancer, and remember those who lost the battle in this once a year, 12-hour event. I thank all the survivors who came out and allowed us to share their special moment with them, and the community and cancer victims’ families who came out.”
Having lost her grandmother Juanita Fleming to cancer last March, Nogis said she understands how hard it is for the families whose loved ones are no longer with them.
“This one night alone makes the months of stressful planning worth it and I owe a lot of the event’s success to the awesome committee members who put in so much of their time and commitment all on a volunteer basis,” Nogis said.
The annual march is the signature event of the Commonwealth Cancer Association and is the largest fundraising activity in the CNMI for cancer programs.
This year’s major and title sponsors were Bank of Guam, Delta Airlines, DFS Galleria, Joeten Charitable Foundation, Take Care, IT&E and Sorensen Media Group, Bank of Saipan, GPPC Inc., Image Saipan Ltd., Marianas Medical Center, Shell, and Marianas Variety.
