“Investigators are not ruling out all possible causes of what triggered the fire, but they have yet to dig out the definite cause,” Department of Public Safety acting spokeswoman Tricia Seman yesterday said.
Seman said acting fire crew supervisor Dan Suel and acting deputy fire director Capt. Tom Manglona are leading the investigation.
Initial investigation showed that the MGM garment factory building used for sewing and cutting sustained extensive damage from the fire.
Investigators said the fire traveled toward the barracks complex from the sewing and cutting area.
Responding firefighters had to deal with hazardous materials, textiles and chemicals.
The MGM fire left 239 employees of the garment factory homeless. No one was hurt and all employees were accounted for. They were able to exit from the building safely.
The fire started at 4:52 a.m. on July 9 and firefighters were able to contain the fire at 3:30 p.m.
It was the second fire to occur on island in a span of three days. On July 7, fire broke out at a business establishment in Garapan due to faulty wiring.
