Chamber official supports anti-crime group

“The program is commendable and I’ve seen it achieve results in other communities. It really does help cut down the crime rate,” chamber executive director Richard A. Pierce told Variety.

He earlier attended the Neighborhood Watch Task Force meeting and expressed his support to the organizers.

He suggested that they meet with other members of the business community.

Sgt. Vicente H. Sablan, task force chairman, said he already made several presentations to the chamber.

He said it will be good for the task force to be in partnership with the business community.

Task force adviser William S. Torres said they are also considering joining the Saipan Rotary Club and other civic organizations.

Ramon B. Camacho, Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council chairman and prime mover of the task force, said they have been getting support from the private sector.

Recently, businessman Ta Bun Kuy donated 20 banners to the task force.

Pierce said the anti-crime program may help address the Department of Public Safety’s manpower problems.

He noted that the program helps educate community members about the need to fight against crime in their villages.

The “chamber is more than willing to participate,” he added.

“We’re victims like anybody else. I think it’s pretty easy to say whenever things are not too good that there’s probably an increase in crime and this is one excellent way to address it,” he said, referring to the task force.

He said he will invite the task force to the chamber’s meeting.

“It would be nice to have them come in and speak to our members,” he added.
