THE 23rd CNMI Senate on Wednesday honored U.S. Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan by unanimously adopting Senate Joint Resolution 23-9, which describes him as a vocal advocate who has consistently championed the interests of the CNMI people.

All the nine senators present voted yes for the adoption of S.J.R. 23-9, which was authored by Sen. Celina R. Babauta, and co-sponsored by the rest of the Senate.

The House of Representatives is expected to adopt the joint resolution on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2024.

Kilili was first elected on Nov. 4, 2008 to become the CNMI’s first delegate to the U.S. Congress. He was re-elected in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2022. He ran unopposed in 2016, 2020 and 2022. He is not seeking a ninth term, and his current term ends in January 2025.

S.J.R. 23-9 also acknowledged Kilili’s service as Precinct 3 representative in the Third CNMI Legislature (1982-1984), and his role as a special representative in the Section 702 talks with the U.S. government that secured a seven-year capital improvement project commitment in the amount of $228 million.

Kilili also served as executive director of the Commonwealth Election Commission.

As U.S. delegate, Kilili “demonstrated his commitment to his constituents with his deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities facing the islands, marking a momentous occasion for the CNMI and a significant step towards greater representation and self-determination,” the joint resolution stated.

As U.S. delegate, Kilili “has tirelessly advocated for the CNMI on [the] national stage, [and] has championed the interests of the CNMI people and its residents with passion and purpose, advocating for equal treatment and recognition of the unique challenges and opportunities the islands face.”

“Advocating for, and championing the needs of the CNMI,” Kilili “secured increased federal funding for vital programs for the Commonwealth including Medicaid, Nutrition Assistance Program, infrastructure, education and economic development, while working to ensure the islands’ voice is heard on issues like immigration, climate change and environmental protection,” the joint resolution stated.

It added that his “commitment to bipartisanship and collaboration fostered productive relationships across the political aisle, leading to significant legislative victories and greater understanding of the CNMI’s needs. He has [also] been a staunch defender of Chamorro culture and language, promoting cultural exchange and appreciation and working to preserve the unique heritage of the CNMI.”

Kilili’s “remarkable achievements, and enduring and honorable public service shall serve as an inspiration and motivation for future generations to serve their community with unwavering dedication and passion,” the joint resolution stated.
