SUVA (PINA) — China is looking at declaring Fiji an approved tourism destination, a process which could attract many Chinese tourists, a Fiji Ministry of Information news release said.
The process of achieving approved destination status began with meetings between Fiji’s Foreign and External Trade Minister Kaliopate Tavola and his Chinese counterparts in Beijing.
Tavola is in a large government and business delegation accompanying Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase on an official visit.
Fiji has invited Chinese authorities to visit Fiji to carry out their auditing and to look at the services that Fiji has for tourists.
The continuation of the Fiji-China bilateral trade agreement was also discussed.
Tavola also promoted the idea of China helping Fiji build the Pacific Village in Suva. This is intended to be a regional conference center and home for regional organizations.
