On Sunday night, the Christmas Village on Capital Hill came to life, bringing holiday cheer to the community amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
The over 40 agencies that are part of the Christmas Village have lit up their displays while complying with the Covid-19 guidelines.
The drive-through Christmas Village begins at the governor’s office on Block 1200, goes up to the Public School System office, then to the Department of Finance and other government buildings.

Every night, each agency is in charge of turning on their Christmas lights by 6 p.m. as well as turning them off during the day.
“We put this up to spread the love, the happiness, and good tidings throughout the season,” said first lady Diann T. Torres. “It’s a hard time this year, but this is what we work hard for: to spread happiness regardless of the hardship that everybody is experiencing.”
Lighting a Christmas tree has been an annual event for the administration, she said as she encouraged community members to see the Christmas Village.
“Bring your families,” she added. “You will find peace just getting in your cars with your kids and driving around [the block].”
A lot of people witnessed the lighting of the Christmas Village on Sunday, including young couples, families with young children, and even jolly old Santa Claus.
“It was really heartwarming to see all of them,” the first lady said as she thanked the Torres-Palacios administration and all of the agencies that made the event possible.
She said each agency spent their time and effort to prepare the displays for everyone to enjoy.
“We wish the entire CNMI, all the families and friends near and far, a safe and a Happy Christmas and New Year. We hope for a better year next year,” the first lady said.
