The CMAG meeting will decide on Fiji’s full suspension from the 53 member nations.
Their task is to assess the nature of the infringement and recommend measures for collective Commonwealth action aimed at the speedy restoration of democracy and constitutional rule.
Fiji was suspended from the Commonwealth on December 8, 2006 following the military take-over because of serious violations of the Harare Principles set out in the Millbrook Plan of Action.
New Zealand foreign minister, Murray McCully, told Radio New Zealand International he regards it as essential to represent the region at the meeting in London.
“We have a meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group in relation to Fiji that has been called for the same day in London, and I think that is going to take precedence over other commitments. That’s a meeting where I have a direct role, where I think the regional representation is essential and so that’s had to have first call upon my time.”
The CMAG currently includes the Foreign Ministers of Ghana, Malaysia, Namibia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, St Lucia, Uganda (Chair) and United Kingdom.
