CNMI launches USDA Local Food Purchase Assistance Program

THE CNMI Office of the Governor, in partnership with the Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Division, will be launching the Local Food Purchase Assistance or LFPA program in the Marianas.

This $410,000 initiative, supported by the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service, aims to strengthen the CNMI’s food system by supporting local, regional, and underserved farmers and producers.

The LFPA program offers flexible procurement strategies to enhance local and regional food systems, prioritizing healthy and nutritious food purchases that reflect the CNMI’s unique geographic area. This initiative focuses on:

• Supporting local and underserved producers, including backyard farmers

• Increasing local food consumption

• Creating economic opportunities for local farmers, producers, and ranchers

By tailoring food distribution to meet the specific needs of the population and feeding programs, the LFPA program addresses food security and nutrition within the CNMI, positively impacting residents’ health and well-being.
