Cockfight board to collect ‘protest’ fee

John M. Borja, the board chairman, said they have amended the protest procedures and requirements to discourage cockfight players from filing protests without a justifiable reason.

He said some have filed protest for the sake of protesting because they can’t accept their loss.

Before, he added, the board had to pay the advertisement notice for hearing a protest.

“Funding from the mayor’s office went mostly to these protests,” he said.

Borja said the board also adopted  new rules on the type of knives that can be used during cockfights.

The rules prohibit the use of “double bladed hollow” or “holed bladed,” he said.

But the amended rules now allow players to use a two-edge blade.

The rules state that a knife should be standard-length slasher made of sharp, high tempered steel with a dull bottom portion.

All knives will be subjected to inspection by the operator or manager, and will be cleaned with anti-toxic chemicals before a fight.

Borja said they will submit the amendments for publication in the Commonwealth Registrar before they take effect.
