Commerce reported that government expenditures were down to $38.27 million for the second quarter of this year compared to $46.44 million during the same period last year.
This is a 17.6 percent decrease — the largest since 2005, the department said.
Government expenditures in the first quarter amounted to $39.86 million.
“The government is spending less,” Ada said.
He added that the decrease in government expenditures is directly correlated to the drop in its off-island travels.
The government is also implementing job hiring restrictions, he said.
He admitted, however, that the islands’ declining revenues are also a major factor.
