Community honors 13 fishermen

Thirty-seven years have passed since 13 fishermen went missing at sea. They were honored by family members during a mass at the memorial site on Saturday, Sept. 23.

MASS was celebrated at the 13 Fishermen Memorial in Garapan on Saturday in honor of the men who died 37 years ago at sea.

On Sept. 23, 1986, during Typhoon Ben, the MV Olwol capsized somewhere between Pagan and Maug.

Aboard the fishing vessel were 12 Carolinian men and a Filipino boat mechanic. They were all experienced fishermen.

The crew of MV Olwol were Isidro Rogopes Romolor, Jose Taisakan Igisaiar, Silvestre Roligat Selepeo, Joaquin Lisua Moteisou, Benusto Rabauliman Olopai, Enrique Lisua Moteisou, Guillermo Saures, Benusto Malus Lisua, Joseph Litulumar Kaipat, Pedro Lairope Mettao, Martin Lairope Saures, Joseph Teregeyo Lisua, and Jovencio Falguera.

Over the weekend, family members of the deceased and other community members burned candles and laid flowers at the monument in Garapan on Beach Road.
