Court modifies bail in domestic violence case

Sumit Dhakal’s original cash bail of $1,500 was modified to $150 cash bail and $1,350 unsecured or appearance bond.

Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo approved the bail modification order.

Assistant Attorney General Shelli Neal strongly opposed the bail modification, saying Dhakal’s latest assault and battery case showed that he violated the terms of his temporary release in another domestic violence case involving his wife.

She said Dhakal “continues to disregard the laws of the commonwealth by committing new crimes while on probation. Further, the defendant displays a callous and wanton disregard for the safety, peace and well being of his wife and child.”

She added, “For the safety of the community and in the interest of justice, we respectfully ask the court to deny the defendant’s application for bail modification and require the defendant to post a cash bond for any release,” she added.

On March 26, Dhakal was arrested after his wife complained he assaulted her and their 13-year-old son inside their house in Dandan.

Police said Dhakal broke a wooden shelf and threw it at his wife and punched his son several times.
