Kenneth L. Govendo, associate judge, accepted the plea and sentenced Anua to a term of 25 years imprisonment, with 10 to serve.
Anua must pay a $5,000 fine, court costs and probation fees, and will be on probation for 10 years beginning when he is released from custody.
Also, he must submit to the test required by 6 CMC Sec. 1312, and register as a sex offender, among other conditions.
The sexual abuse occurred on May 23, 2011 and Anua has been in custody since his arrest on May 24, 2011.
Assistant Attorney General Shelli Neal and Chief Prosecutor Michael Ernest prosecuted the case.
“I am pleased with the investigation of this case; [the Department of Public Safety] did a thorough and professional job” Ernest said. “Also, AAG Shelli Neal is to be commended for her diligence in reaching a quick and final resolution to this case. The people of the CNMI were well served by her efforts.”
Attorney General Edward T. Buckingham praised the Criminal Division, stating, “This case reflects the positive changes and exceptional efforts we’ve been making at the AG’s office. The defendant was given a fair but revocable offer and his discovery packet well before his arraignment; had he attempted to be freed on bail, the offer would have been immediately revoked. The Criminal Division is working to keep the CNMI safer, and is doing a commendable job.”
In less than four months, this case was charged and completed. The defendant pleaded to a serious felony and received a serious punishment.
