Court sets $15K bail for Calvo

During yesterday’s bail hearing, Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo set the preliminary hearing for June 25 while the arraignment will be on July 14.Govendo also gave the Attorney General’s Office until June 19 to file the information against Calvo.

The court issued a warrant of arrest against Calvo on June 13, after finding probable cause to support the charges of sexual assault in the second degree, sexual abuse of a minor in the third degree and disturbing the peace.

Calvo was accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl on June 11.

In a press conference, Department of Public Safety Commissioner Clyde K. Norita said Calvo surrendered to the Attorney General’s Office in Susupe yesterday morning and was brought to DPS where he was served the warrant of arrest, booked and detained.

Norita said the police, including the SWAT, conducted a manhunt operation for Calvo on Saturday.

They found Calvo’s vehicle in a farm area on the southern part of Saipan.

Just last week, Calvo announced his intention to run for the U.S. Congress as an independent candidate.

Calvo is the current president of the Saipan Rotary Club and the owner of Calvo’s Nursery and Landscaping and the Island Farmers Market.

In 2000, Calvo was charged with sexually abusing two sisters. He was acquitted in the case involving the younger sister, while the charges against him involving the elder sister were later dismissed.
