In a statement, the ruling party said although the former senator may sway a few votes, he cannot win.
“Voters should seriously ask themselves whether Mr. Guerrero contributed to the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s current problems as [its] former executive director,” it stated.
The people, it added, should review the Office of the Public Auditor’s report on Deleon Guerrero’s administration of CUC.
Deleon Guerero earlier told the Variety that Gov. Benigno R. Fitial made false promises to the CNMI people when he was still a candidate in 2005.
Deleon Guerero said Fitial pledged to remove CUC’s fuel surcharge but it did not happen.
He added that government agencies under the Fitial administration are mismanaged.
The Covenant Party, however, said Deleon Guerero “failed to recognize many of the governors’ accomplishments, despite the severe challenges encountered by the commonwealth.”
The former senator, the ruling party said, “doesn’t consider the governor’s successful action in securing temporary Aggreko engines to end the daily rolling power outages the CNMI people suffered in 2008.”
Deleon Guerrero, it added, does not see “the amazing rehabilitation of CUC’s assets using federal funds from the Department of the Interior.”
The rehabilitation was done in a substantially reduced cost, and without having to purchase new generators that the CNMI cannot afford, the Covenant Party said.
It also mentioned the timely release of tax refunds and rebates as another example of the governor’s accomplishments.
Fitial has no authority over CUC fuel charges since the market determines the cost of fuel, the Covenant Party said.
The Commonwealth Public Utilities Commission is responsible for regulating CUC rates, not the governor’s office, the party added.
