CRM: Coral Ocean Point lacks erosion control measures

THE Coastal Resources Management has warned Coral Ocean Point hotel about its lack of proper erosion control measures, and ordered the immediate removal of silt material placed near the edge of a cliff line.

In a warning notice issued on May 29, acting CRM Administrator Joaquin D. Salas said a site inspection at COP’s golf course showed that a back filling’s silt material was placed at the very edge of the cliff line near tee box number 17 without any erosion control measure.

“Due to the urgency for immediate course of action or corrective measure that this violation needs, CRM is ordering that the removal action be conducted within three days from receipt of this notice,” Salas told Coral Ocean Point Manager Yoshiro Kishimoto in a one-page letter.

Salas said this type of activity is in violation of the CRM program rules and regulations, and is also not in line with the program’s goals in maintaining water quality of the marine environment.

“By this letter, CRM is ordering COP to remove the fill materials, and visit the Division of Environmental Quality office to obtain the proper erosion control measures to implement at the site in order to prevent any sediment wash into the marine environment,” Salas said.

Rex Moses, COP assistant general manager, said the hotel establishment was in the process of removing the silt material away from the cliff line.

“As we speak, we’re already taking care of the problem. It should be done by Monday,” Moses told Variety on Friday.

Salas said if any silt was washed into the marine environment from this unauthorized activity, CRM would levy the necessary monetary fines.

“And should this activity be repeated any time in the future without the proper permits, CRM will levy a fine without any warning notice,” Salas said.
