CUC board election stalled

THE annual election for the new set of Commonwealth Utilities Corp. officers was stalled yesterday because two members failed to show up.

There is reportedly a power struggle among the board members due to the impending election, but this was denied by acting CUC Chairwoman Zania Fleming.

“I wouldn’t say that there’s a power struggle. I think it’s more of a miscommunication,” said Fleming, whose term would expire on July 9.

Fleming said there was no quorum yesterday so she would call for another meeting on June 22.

“We need at least four board members present. We didn’t have it so the meeting was adjourned,” she said.

“Two of the members said they had emergencies to attend to but we didn’t receive any notices in writing,” she added.

The CUC board currently has five members—Fleming, Frank Guerrero, Laura Manglona, Rosario Elameto and Frank Camacho.

Manglona and Guerrero were not present yesterday.

Elameto, a former CUC board chairwoman, and Camacho are reportedly vying for the chairmanship.

Meanwhile, Gov. Juan N. Babauta has nominated businessman Herman P. Sablan as the newest member of the CUC board representing Saipan.

“The lt. governor and I are confident that you are qualified and will be an asset on this most important board,” Babauta told Sablan.

Babauta has already endorsed Sablan’s nomination to the Senate. If confirmed, he would serve a four-year term.
