“There is a high probability that many island groups will experience some very dry months during the first half of 2010,” according to a report of the U.S. Climate Prediction Center.
Commonwealth Utilities Corp. water division manager Mariano Iglecias yesterday said the report gives them the opportunity to prepare for any eventuality.
“We would like to inform the community that this problem is imminent,” he added.
CUC, he said, is asking the cooperation of its customers who are urged to conserve water.
He said residents should report any leaking pipes in their homes, which CUC can fix for a minimal charge if a customer cannot afford the services of private plumbers.
According to the report, Guam and the CNMI are now entering the heart of their dry seasons.
“By March or April, it should become dry enough to increase the risk of brush fires that normally occur in the latter half of the dry season,” the report added..
Iglecias said CUC continues to work with its laboratory to monitor the changes in water quality.
If there’s less rainfall, the quality of water also diminishes, he added.
Part of the CUC’s contingency plan for El Niño is the replacement of defective mainline valves to allow greater control in water distribution, he said.
He said they will monitor consistently the data of water flow on island.
