CUC says new water meters calibrated

Although CUC has not received any complaint yet regarding the newly installed  meters, it is ready to correct any problem brought to its attention, he added.

Megarr said if there are discrepancies in water consumption or any suspicion of meter tampering, CUC has to be informed so it can immediately look into the complaint.

He said the replacement of defective water meters can be accomplished before the March 2010 deadline set by the federal court as stated in the stipulated orders.

Megarr said CUC “can complete the installation of new meters by September this year.

Starting this summer, he said, CUC is scheduled to replace an additional 2,000 meters on Saipan.

CUC is also on time in complying with the requirement to have a water meter installation, as well as a reading and billing program, he added.

Last year, about 4,500 defective water meters were retrieved and Severn Trent Services, the vendor, delivered new meters as replacement.

Megarr said once the new meters are installed, the billing will be more accurate and there will be more incentives to conserve water.

The new meter is designed to conform with U.S. standards, he added.
