CUC to focus on distribution, transmission system

“I think we got a commensurate service for what we paid for,” he said.

The one-year contract cost the CNMI at least $6 million.

Based on its recent schedule of maintenance report CUC is expecting to complete the repair of Engine 5 in October and Engine 6 in December. Each will generate 10 megawatts of power.

CUC is producing 55 megawatts for Saipan, Muna said.

These include the 14 megawatts from Pacific Marine and Industrial Corp. which operates Power Plant 4.

According to Muna, CUC can maintain 15 megawatts in reserve capacity since the island’s system peak load is only 40 megawatts

CUC’s report stated that this month, Power Plant 1 will continue to produce 33 megawatts while  Power Plant 2’s capacity will be 8 megawatts.

Now that Aggreko is no longer part of CUC’s power generation system, Muna said they will focus on their transmission and distribution system.

Last Thursday, some parts of Garapan experienced an unscheduled power outage around 10 a.m. and Muna said this was caused by a line fault in Feeder 2.

The power interruptions in other areas were attributed to problems in the transmission distribution lines, he added.

“As far as power generation requirement is concerned, after we disconnected Aggreko, we’re ready,” Muna said. “What you are observing now is a proof that we are ready to supply the island with CUC power.”
