CUC: Transf ormer failure causes power outage

The power went out past 4 p.m., and responding CUC personnel was able to bring it back an hour and a half later, according to Gary Camacho, CUC power division director.

Camacho said two crew members who responded to a trouble call in Chinatown were in the process of restoring the power when an electrical fault was experienced in another area covered by Feeder 1.

Aggreko’s generators, which at the time were producing 15 megawatts, immediately went off-line causing  CUC’s 480-volt power plant transformer breaker to open.

CUC’s Power Plant 1 was producing only 12 megawatts, Camacho said, and due to the instant loss of Aggreko’s 15 megawatts, it was not able to sustain the load.

This caused both engines of CUC’s power plant to automatically shut down, he added.

Camacho said the problem was isolated right away and the restoration process was immediately initiated by  CUC personnel.
