The dates and venues of the survey will be announced soon.
The survey is being conducted to complement House Bill 17-181, introduced by Rep. Joseph M. Palacios, R-Saipan, which would push for the inclusion of the question “Should the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam, reunify in pursuit of a new political status?” on the general election ballot.
Results collected from the survey will be turned over to Palacios and his committee to assist in their deliberations. The survey will be non-binding, however, which means that its results will not have any bearing on any prospective law or policy.
“Discussions about reunification between the CNMI and Guam have been circulating for the past 60 years,” said Current Issues instructor Sam McPhetres. “A similar movement to discuss reunification is starting in Guam.”
McPhetres added, “This survey will help people contemplate the pros and cons of reunification and help our team paint a clear picture of what direction the CNMI population wants to pursue.”
