DCCA acting Secretary Melvin Faisao declined to disclose the number of possible violators, but added that they are now “under investigation.”
He said the government is taking steps to reduce or prevent food stamp fraud by closely monitoring retailers and commodities purchase with food stamps.
According to Faisao, they were told that some food stamp recipients have been misusing their coupons in collusion with certain retailers.
DCCA, he added, has already assigned units to conduct inspections and informational campaigns.
DCCA earlier disclosed that it needed approximately $13 million for the federally funded food stamp program — $5 million higher than its current $8 million budget.
