The $100 was a one-time payment, he added.
“I doesn’t see the rationale behind having this private company lease the property” for a small amount, considering the nature of the firm’s business.
He disclosed this information as he continues to review the CUC-Telesource contract which he earlier said had undergone three to four change orders during the initial period of its signing.
“One of the things that I was surprised was that CUC leased about 20,000 square meters… to Telesource where the generating plant was situated for $100,” said Dela Cruz, Covenant-Saipan and a member of the House Committee on Public Utilities, Transportation and Communications.
CUC signed an exclusivity contract for 10 years with Telesource in May 1997, and renewed it in 2001 for another 20 years.
Sen. Joseph M. Mendiola, Covenant-Tinian and chairman of the island’s legislative delegation, earlier said that CUC renewed the contract even before it could expire.
Dela Cruz has said that he and Mendiola will meet with Telesource in order to clarify this lease agreement and other provisions stated in its contract with CUC.
