Council Chairwoman Dr. Debra T. Cabrera said Deleon Guerrero’s appointment was effective Jan. 5. He replaces the council’s previous executive director, Paz C. Younis, who retired in 2008.
Deleon Guerrero comes to the council with extensive management and administrative experience in the fields of education and the visitor industry.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in hotel administration, a master’s degree in educational leadership, and an honorary doctorate degree from Soka University in Tokyo.
Before joining the council, Deleon Guerrero served as president of Northern Marianas College from February 2004 until his retirement in August 2006.
Prior to his appointment as president, Deleon Guerrero served in a number of faculty and administrative posts at NMC over an 18-year career including dean of professional programs, dean of community programs and services, and director of institutional development.
Deleon Guerrero has also been active in a variety of professional and community service activities.
Cabrera noted that the council was fortunate to have an executive director with Deleon Guerrero’s experience.
“The council is a small organization but one with an important mission,” she said. “Mr. Deleon Guerrero brings a wealth of experience to the council that will help us to improve the quality and diversity of our humanities programming.”
The Humanities Council is a private, non-profit corporation established in the commonwealth in 1991. It is affiliated with and receives annual grant support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The NEH is dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation and other public programs in the humanities.
The council’s mission is to foster awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the humanities through support of educational programs that relate the humanities to the indigenous cultures and to the intellectual needs of the people of the commonwealth.
