In an interview on Friday, Deleon Guerrero, the running mate of gubernatorial candidate Juan N. Babauta, said it is also about time for CNMI Republicans to understand what it really means to be Republicans.
In this kind of economy, what the CNMI needs is the Republican belief in a fiscally conservative government.
“Ideologically speaking, we need Republican principles more than ever. We need stewardship and responsible conservative fiscal spending,” he said.
Deleon Guerrero said the CNMI should also promote private enterprise.
“That is what the Republican Party stands for,” he said, adding that the only thing that will save the economy is private enterprise.
A former principal, Deleon Guerrero believes that the GOP gubernatorial candidate — whether it is Babauta or Rep. Heinz S. Hofschneider — will implement responsible fiscal spending in the government.
Deleon Guerrero said in CNMI politics, it is easy to distinguish a Republican from Democrats or Covenant Party members.
Historically speaking, he said, the GOP is the CNMI’s strongest and most successful parties.
He recalled that the CNMI’s first governor chose to become Democrat as matter of political strategy.
James E. Carter, a Democrat, was president. when Carlos S. Camacho was elected governor in 1977.
Practically speaking, Deleon Guerrero said a political party affects policies.
He believes that after the GOP primary in June, the party will patch any the differences among its members and leaders and wage a strong campaign for the November elections.
