During last week’s meeting which was attended by self-described “die-hard” Democrats and individuals who want to be members, the remaining members of the board took the first step in reorganizing the party.
Acting party chairwoman Meling Chargualaf said the board will elect a new party chairman and designate committee members and their heads.
This year, for the first time in CNMI history, the local Democratic Party will have no gubernatorial candidate.
Two Democrats, however, are seeking seats in the Legislature and one is running for Saipan mayor.
Rep. Justo S. Quitugua of Precinct 4 is a senatorial candidate, while party board member Henry A. Torres is seeking a House seat in Precinct 2.
Former Rep. Antonio M. Camacho will run for Saipan mayor.
Former party chairman Manny Sablan wants Jesse Torres, president of Kagman Komunidat Association, to be the new head of the party.
Torres said he will accept the job if the board offers it to him.
He said he will attend tomorrow’s meeting and “see what will come up next.”
