DPS: Ex-MHS teacher was ill

“The deceased had a medical history of mental illness and was a known alcoholic. The case has been placed under investigation pending next of kin,” said Department of Public Safety acting spokesman PO2 Jason Tarkong in an e-mail.

The body of the 49-year-old man was already in the early stages of decomposition when it was discovered, police said.

Hotel employees were notified by the man’s  friend, who is also renting a room at the establishment, after he failed to respond to her phone calls and text messages.

The man was last seen alive on Saturday after a hotel employee fixed the electrical safety box of his room on the second floor of Stanford Resort.

His friend, together with hotel employees, decided to knock on his door, but did not get any response.

At about 8:30 a.m., hotel employees decided to open the door, but they were unable to do because the man’s body was blocking it.

Police said they responded to a report at about 9:03 a.m. of a possible dead person and noticed a foul odor coming from inside the room.

Police eventually gained access to the room.

Police investigators did not say if an autopsy will be performed on the victim.

An employee of the Northern Marianas Protection and Advocacy Systems Inc., who earlier arrived at the hotel and inquired about the man’s whereabouts, identified the former teacher as an NMPASI client, police said.

The man was transported to the Commonwealth Health Center, where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Shirish Balachandra at 11:30 a.m.

Prior to the discovery of the victim’s body, hotel employees noted the foul odor as well as the flies around the window and door of the man’s room.
